For the most observant of our long-time readers the name Abby Lee Tee might ring a bell. The Austrian producer hailing from the city of Linz has been making beats for a couple of years and most recently released an album title “By accident” with guest spots by Mieux, Affine-signed Wandl and Ritornell-collaborator Mimu Merz. What follows is an interview with the man, spiced up with snippets from his new record and lastly his guestmix.
First of all, can you start by introducing yourself?
I’m a musician (producer & DJ) living in Linz, a tiny town in Austria, despite being the country’s third-biggest city. Beside any kind of sound, records and odd instruments, I’m also in love with silence, visual arts, books, my cats & otters.
I always like to ask about two key moments: do you remember the first time that you responded to music and when was it clear to get involved in makingmusic?
One of my first memories concerning music is my mum listening to Santana’s Black Magic Woman. Also, my older brother used to listen to some nice jazz records back then. Later on I got in touch with hip hop, mainly through skateboarding, radio and music television. Soon after I bought my first turntables and became part of the hip hop group Hinterland, leading from there to music production and a growing interest in other genres.
Tell us about an ordinary day in your hometown, Linz. What’s the city like?
As it’s not the biggest city (about 200k inhabitants), there’s not too much distraction, which makes it a good place to work for me. But for it’s size, Linz also got a remarkably big (independent) art scene, nearly everyone knows each other after some years of living here and you see a lot of different people (from different genres) collaborating with each other. While you can enjoy the river Danube’s beaches and the woods just minutes away from the centre, it’s also only a short hop of a bit more than an hour by train to vienna. And I still find interesting music at the local (second-hand) record stores.
You run a night called “the future sound”, how did this come up and who’s playing at your parties?
Starting point was a night called “The Future Sound of Vienna” in 2010 with Dorian Concept. After that my friend F!no and I teamed up to continue cultivating this kind of sound with a monthly club night, which we’ve been doing for more than 5 years now, hosting artists such as Prefuse 73, Dimlite, Jeremy Ellis, Shigeto, Nosaj Thing, Floating Points, Flako an Julian Sartorius.
Your album “by accident” was just released. Tell us about the process and what it’s about.
While working on the album for the last 1.5 years I bought and tried to work with a lot of acoustic instruments. Besides, I’ve always been into field recordings. After using at least a couple of samples back in the days, I’m now completely stuck into using my own sounds only. The title “by accident” also refers to the more or less randomly layered field recordings, building the foundation of most of the tracks. Also, I’m pretty happy about the lovely collaborations with Wandl, Mimu, Mieux and GC (the latter being responsible for mix and mastering), plus the perfectly fitting visual concept (artwork, video, A/V-show) by System Jaquelinde!
And what’s next in music, is there any new work coming up?
Besides gigs and guestmixes, I’m back into making remixes , but really looking forward to use all the sounds I recorded during the last months preparing the release. And there’s a “by accident” remix-album in the making.
Lastly, tell us about the mix you recorded.
It’s a pretty wild mixture of stuff which inspired me while producing “by accident”, focusing on the more ambient and weird kind of records.

In a recent post, Oli Marlow of underground music blog Sonic Router announced his “retirement” from writing (uhm, or something like that), focusing on the label side of the brand. The label achieved to release an impressive body of work in last three years or so, and continues perform strong.

There’s little to say about a record with collaborators of the quality of MED, Blu, and Madlib. Nope, Madlib’s skills haven’t worn off. Yes, it’s great record. The incredible line-up includes guests such as MF Doom, Dâm-Funk, Frank Nitt, Oh No, Anderson Paak, Hodgy Beats… Why do I feel like trying to sell something that’s already sold?
Just go on, get your copy. Don’t let that fugly sleeve spoil the whole thing, just think about what Bo Diddley sang. You can buy this everywhere: Rappcats, iTunes, your favourite record store. Everywhere!

Playing with mystery is as old as art itself. And even when the mysterious isn’t the subject of art, the person behind the artwork has often become the mystery. From the writer picking a pen name to the performer cloaking his identity, it has been done for a long time. Yet, it feels like in recent years there has been an increase of this phenomenon, in particular the use of masks has become more of a gimmick, a marketing tool to increase the interest in or the awareness about an artist. As you can question the motives of an artist, what’s so comforting for the follower to reveal who is using a new name, a new face? Why do we seek the safety-net of a tracklist when it’s more adventurous to listen to something new and unheard, without prejudice?
Well, I don’t necessarily want to be part of that speculation, but it seems the internet has already decided about the true identity of Levantis. Though (or because) I have heard the same said about Rezzett, or in fact quite a number of artists on Trilogy Tapes, I don’t give much of a fuck. Let’s stick to what’s there, and so far there isn’t much more than a mostexcellent EP released on the said label. Earlier this week, Ninja Tune affiliate label Technicolour revealed its first album release, the 11-track “Romantic Psychology 1” by —you guessed it— the oh-so-mysterious Levantis. You can listen to a first track above, but I’m sure before its release on October 30th, there will be plenty more to be revealed.
I guess I liked quite a couple of bits on this new Knxwledge album on Stones Throw, and of course the album artwork is something I’m very drawn to. At the same time I often have troubles buying a record of beat tape proportions, with hardly a track extending the 2-minute mark — but that’s just me. Anyway, today Stones Throw unveiled this video by the ever amazing RUFFMERCY, so you know you’re in for a visual treat.
Alright. Here is one great video from what I think we can call a major rap artist. Imaginative, beautifully shot, crisp. Nothing to say about the music, you probably all heard Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly by now — and if you haven’t, here’s a good reason to do so. Video directed by Colin Tilley.
Looks like the summer holidays are near, the time of the year when hardly any music is coming out. So, today Werk Discs announced the release of Helena Hauff‘s debut album “
Discreet Desires”, and it will be released in early September. I don’t know, the word early doesn’t change the fact that September is far in the future. Anyway, above you can listen to a first track from that very album, and hopefully more will be revealed in the next two months. If you can’t wait, you can pre-order the album on Helena’s Bandcamp store today!
It was a bit of short notice, just before the weekend, that Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label announced the release of a new mini-album by fellow bass player and singer Thundercat. Among the six tracks on “The Beyond / Where the Giants Roam”, there is the wonderful track you can hear above.
So, if you’re not madly into Thundercat’s work already, this should serve as an excellent appetizer. Available from the NinjaShop, Bleep or iTunes. Digital only from what it looks like — sad face.
I’m just through a first listen to Onra‘s latest album and as you probably expected, it’s a beauty. Like his 2010 album Long Distance, the new record takes you back to the sounds of the past, in my case that’s the time when I discovered my love for hip-hop of the late eighties and early nineties. Among the many collaborators are Black Milk, Olivier Day Soul, MC Melodee, Suzi Analogue. For a quick impression of what the record sounds, check out my favourite tracks 5, 6 and 8.

Five months into 2015 and I got my second contender for album of the year, following John T. Gast’s Excerpts on Planet Mu. Bill Kouligas’ PAN continues to be one of the most innovative labels in recent years and this debut album by Lifted is a prime example of their wonderful work. Lifted is an ongoing collaboration between Beautiful Swimmer’s Max D and Matt Papich aka Co La, and the record features guests such as Jordan GCZ (Juju & Jordash) and ambient producer Gigi Masin. The resulting music is as varied as its ingredients: jazz percussion, ambient synths, and the piano; “1” does not fit into genre definitions, it breaks them up and re-arranges them beautifully.
Yesterday on March 29th, Berlin’s composer, producer and pianist Nils Frahms introduced the world to what should now be know as “Piano Day”, a holiday to celebrate this very instrument. On the occasion, you can download a new album entitled “Solo” on the Piano Day website. Erased Tapes also sells physical releases on CD and vinyl in order to provide funding for a unique instrument, the Klavins M450, a 4-meter high piano construction by David Klavins. All music on “Solo” was performed on an early prototype of the M450.

Looking back, we’ve been writing about fLako‘s music for quite some time. From his humble beginnings on UpMyAlley and his own Kwatro imprint, the German-Chilean producer has come a long way. And if the expectations for his debut album “Natureboy” hadn’t been high enough, his guest appearance on Alexander Nut’s Rinse show made the last week before its release hard to bare.
Always having been a huge fan of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, this is the album track I want to share with you. However, you can actually go ahead and stream the entire album or pick it up from all good record stores.
