The day following last year’s Boiler Room-hosted Co-OP reunion, broken beat veteran producers IG Culture, Seiji, Alex Phountzi and Jazz re:freshed host Adam Rock were joined by torchbearer Henry Wu for a recording session at Play Deep Studios. Whatever comes out of this, I’m sure many of you are craving for more. Will keep you updated if there are any news on this!
Following NameBrandSounds‘ debut EP on Technicolour was followed by several remixes by the duo consisting of IG Culture and Alex Phountzi. One of them was the remix for Ill Blu‘s Blu Magic, which —I think— was never properly released.
Well, as of today you can grab a free download from the NameBrandSound Bandcamp page. Enjoy!
I first heard about NameBrandSound, the new project by IG Culture and Bugz in the Attic’s Alex Phountzi, when the latter sent me a track some months ago. Back then I wasn’t too impressed by most music categorized as juke. Yes, it had a certain energy and rawness that was compelling, but on the downside most of the music sounded cheap. All of that has changed when DJ Rashad’s Double Cup came out on Hyperdub, as it introduced a more coherent, organic sound.
I’m happy to say that the debut EP by NameBrandSound brings along the mature production quality, while keeping the raw energy of its American cousin. It’s good to hear the duo venturing into something new and I’m looking forward to where they’ll take their experimentations with the genre in the future. The four tracker was released yesterday on Ninja Tune sublabel Technicolour and is available on vinyl and digital download. Order your copy directly from the label or try Bleep, iTunes or your favourite record store.

It took me a while, but I finally caught up listening to some more recent DJ mixes. Here are a couple worth checking out, including some brand new ones!
There is now way around this first one, as Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet has once again graced the decks at the Rinse.fm studio. If you just look for one mix to listen to, make it this one!
Next up there is Luke Vibert‘s mix for FACT Magazine from a couple of weeks back. Brilliant selection ranging from eighties boogie and electro to proto-acid.
Alex Phountzi and IG Culture have teamed up last year to form NameBrandSound, experimenting with juke and bass music, with an album in the pipeline for Ninja Tune sublabel Technicolor. Here’s their mix for Solid Steel Radio.
Oh, and don’t miss the later part of the same show, featuring a mix by Mo Kolours, whose debut album is available now!
News from Aardvarck are rare, but they usually involve a DJ mix by the former Rednose Distrikt man. Listen to The Present House of Aardvarck before it’s gone (which often happens quickly!)
I remember hearing about a Dublab livestream from UpMyAlley founder Joscha Creutzfeldt, but unfortunately it was only the day after. But the man was good enough to share his selection of soulful music on SoundCloud the other day.
And we’ll end this selection with two of my favourite producers from the early noughties: Domu, now officially back from retirement, recorded a new mixtape for our listening pleasure, while Titonton Duvanté rediscovered one recorded in 1995.
Former Bugz in the Attic member Alex Phountzi has been supplying me with new Greenmoney material for some time now, but it never felt right to go with my usual selection of tracks. It’s different with the latest tune from the duo, an afrobeat flavoured remix for Nigerian Bongos Ikwue.
Not as hard as what I’m used to from Greenmoney, but still clearly one for the dancefloor. It will be out in the near future on Bik Entertainment.
