In summer 2014, a first trailer for Looking for the Perfect Beat surfaced, yet another documentation about the Los Angeles scene centered around Low End Theory. Unlike The Beat or All Ears, this film was actually completed and was shown at various festivals around the world. The documentary follows the likes of Teebs, Daedelus, Ras G, Tokimonsta, Jonwayne or Matthewdavid, giving insights into their creative process.
If you’re living in LA, you have a chance to watch it at the Downtown Independent over the next couple of days. Everybody else needs to keep an eye out or wait for some kind of digital release.

All Ears is a documentary on the Los Angeles beat scene, directed by independent filmmaker Gus Sutherland and premiered last week at SXSW. A look at the trailer reveals the involvement of Daedelus, Eothen “Egon” Alapatt, Ras G, Kutmah, Matthewdavid – and that’s only the tip of the iceberg. Unfortunately, there is no announcement yet for future screenings or a release of this documentary.
This is already the second documentary on the LA scene on our radar, we previously wrote about The Beat which still seems to be in the making (updates on their Vimeo page!) In the meantime, London-based Laurent Fintoni is working on a book on the subject.
San Francisco-based video production house Chromavision is currently working on a documentary on the now famous LA beat scene. Their goal is to tell the story of this musical movement that started in clubs such as Sketchbook or Low End Theory, and ignited the careers of the likes of Flying Lotus, Nosaj Thing, Ras G, or Sweatson Klank .
However, to make this project happen the team needs your help! Feel invited to pledge a dollar (up to $10,000) on Kickstarter and receive exclusive gifts in return.
