In December 2006, a trailer to a documentary called Urban Vibes has been uploaded to YouTube. I remember running into the French film crew at the Notting Hill Carnival the summer before and was eager to watch the documentary once completed. Years passed and occasionally I remembered it, searched on Google, but while it was marked complete, I never ended up seeing it. Eventually, I forgot about it.
And then today, the unthinkable happened. Bored at work, I scrolled down my Instagram feed and ran across an interesting post by Mr Beatnick. Another search of Google, not expecting anything, I came across the full documentary which is now available for stream on Vimeo On Demand. Rebranded “Broken Vibes”, you can rent it for only €2 and stream it in Full HD for 48 hours! If you need to be convinced, watch
an extended clip the trailer above.
Hyperdub man Scratcha DVA goes all broken on his latest mixtape uploaded to his SoundCloud page. Despite being called Shazam City Mix, the software was not able to identify all the tracks. Even worse, it includes a couple of tracks I know sitting somewhere in my shelf, but I wasn’t able to identify them all (the Bembé track mixing into Jill Scott bugs me the most!)01. Reel People feat. Darien – Upside (Bugz Dubside Mix)
03. Shokazulu – Hips Don’t Fail Me Now
04. Tatham, Mensah, Lord & Ranks – Stars Shine For You
06. Dego & Kaidi – Acting up on that Shit Don’t Count
07. Vikter Duplaix – Manhood
08. Jill Scott – Golden (Remix)
10. Jazzanova – Soon (Domu Vocal Mix)
11. Shokazulu – Sammy Sebastian
12. DVA feat. Zaki Ibrahim & Metrodome – Solid
13. IG Culture – DJ Power (Use It)
14. The Free Design – Lullaby (J-Nova Remix)

The West London based collective Viewmanoid created this neat animation.
Meet Shakerboys, a quintet of shakers geared with lightbeat-boxes and rythmic heads. Watch them having a go on a brokenbeat music performance.
Found them through their Coopr8 page, and I’m already excited about their future work.
