It always seemed to me that Darkstar‘s second album didn’t live up to the expectations many people had, but personally I count it to my favourite records of the year. With a new video by Lucy Luscombe, an upcoming series of remix EPs and autumn flexing its muscles, this is probably a good time to give it another chance. Wait, did I just slip in some valuable information about new remixes into the middle of a sentence? It’s true, according to XLR8R there will be several EPs of album tracks remixed by the likes of of Zomby, Motor City Drum Ensemble, and Darkstar themselves and others. Unfortunately, no release dates were disclosed at this time. Back to the video then!
Since the release of Aidy’s Girl Is A Computer in 2009, Darkstar have grown from a duo to three-man-band, released a much acclaimed debut album on Hyperdub, and more recently signed to Warp Records. Their follow-up album News From Nowhere will be out in about 2 weeks time and they’ve just released the video you can see above. Oh, apparently it was filmed in the same tank as the opening scene of Skyfall (if that does anything to you…)
You can pre-order the new album Rough Trade (bonus CD included), Bleep and iTunes, or stream the full record for the time being.

Taken from their forthcoming album North on Hyperdub, Darkstar‘s cover of “You Remind Me Of Gold” by Human League is the trio’s first single.
To create this video, director Evan Boehm used a structured light scanner for the 3D light points of Darkstar’s heads, imagery from The National Library of Medicine and a custom made particles software. More details on the process can be found here.
Expect the single in store November 8, backed up by a remix from John Roberts.
