Work on the backend of the site and traveling around have kept me from posting many mixtapes this year, but then again I don’t recall much worth posting. So here is a selection of recommended mixtapes released throughout the month.
About six months ago, we were happy to have Gerry Read contribute to our own podcast series. Since then, the 20 year old Englishman released three much acclaimed 12-inches on the Fourth Wave label. Reason enough for XLR8R to invite him to do their first podcast of the year.
Boiler Room #69 was easily the most successful session to date, with thousand tuned in for the Thom Yorke’s DJ set. The really good sets that night came from others: Lone, Illum Sphere and Jamie xx with Caribou. And it’s the latter’s mix that’s finally available for download.
Two new mixes come from Hyperdub’s own Ossie. The young Londoner guested on GETME! Radio radio-show, as well as on the Hyperdub show on Rinse.
The latest Sonic Router mix comes from Moscow’s Pixelord, interview and download can be found here!
For some proper house music, check out the latest from Linkwood.
And lastly some older mixes. SBTRKT returned to Rinse for his third show, Kuedo did a mix for Motto Distribution, and King Midas Sound contributed to Dummy Mag‘s podcast.
Happy New Year to all of my readers, I hope 2012 will be a good one. It should easily be better than last year, at least when it comes to my private life: in 2011 I was robbed and later I suffered an ear stroke, possibly as a late reaction to the robbery. But well, we’re not talking about my private life so much, let’s talk about music!
In the first year of this blog, I wrote an article on best-of lists and I still think they’re kinda ridiculous. However, I also think it can be of benefit for those who only read this blog every now and then and wonder what good music they might have missed. I tried to limit each list to 5 items, because otherwise I wouldn’t know where to stop as 2011 was another year of rich releases. So without further ado, here are my personal top releases.
Thundercat – The Golden Age of the Apocalypse
Dimlite – Grimm Reality
Zomby – Dedication
SBTRKT – SBTRKT
Hyetal – Broadcast
Floating Points – Shadows EP
Arkist – Rendezvous
Ossie – Set The Tone
Actress – Harrier ATTK
Mr Beatnick – Synthetes
Kutmah – The New Error 2
Jamie xx – Essential Mix
Jamie xx – Guestmix for Benji B
Dauwd – Clashmusic Podcast
FaltyDL – Fader/MoMA PS1 mix
Apparat – Groove Podcast
An honorable mention to Elzhi’s Elmatic, as it’s a more than worthy tribute to the classic debut album by Nas – and it was available for free throughout the year.
Second Ossie post for the day and I’m in the perfect mood for a 4×4 banger like this one. I have to admit though: I’d probably find this Pharoah Sanders edit a bit corny on any other day, but please decide for yourself.
Anyway, there’s a download available if you like it. If you’re in London on Friday you should catch his set at Fabric, otherwise get the mixtape he made for them.
I was gonna dedicate this post to the new Ossie mixtape alone, but with no playlist available and some other quality tapes around I revived that old Mixtape Monday.
So Ossie will be playing Room 3 at Fabric next Friday, and as if we could ever forget Set The Tone, the London producer came up with a very nice mixtape. Download, play, then read the Q&A.
Just like last year, Amsterdam based label Rush Hour put out a mix of their best releases of 2011. Incidently there’s also a compilation of the same name and it’s available now (thanks Green Tea Session!)
Having put out quality house music all throughout the year, Wolf Music can hardly be called a secret anymore. I’ve featured some of their mixtapes before, their latest comes from label head Matt and is available here!
More than three years ago, I’ve posted a video about this Blakai tune and it’s a shame that one never came out. I’m going to wait some more, but first I’ll hear what Mark Force put on his new mix.
Like with the Ossie set above, RAMP Recording‘s Tom Kerridge did a Fabric mix the other week. Kinda forgot about it, but luckily it’s still around.
And lastly, listen to Benji B’s Deviation String Quartet, recorded in October on the London Eye (remember the video?)
This was supposed to be a collection of mixes for the weekend, but since Ms Riot was in town over the weekend..
Just hot off the press is the latest Resident Advisor podcast mixed by Martyn. As you all know, his new album arrived today, so maybe you want to listen to this mix on your way to the shop.
The last couple of mixes by Tropics became all-time favourites in no time, so I’m really looking forward to this new one for oki-ni.
2000black founder Dego is currently on tour through Japan. I wonder if he really needs promo mixes to fill clubs over there, but he made one just in case (and for everybody outside of Japan.)
And from there it’s easy to draw a line to Eric Lau’s Last Night on Earth mix for Put Me On It, which went online a couple of days ago already.
Set The Tone is already one of the biggest dance tunes for me this year, so I’ve been following all of Ossie‘s activity since then. Last week he came up with a mix for the Hyponik podcast and it’s a good one.
Jacques Greene was on Rinse FM last week, Phon.o contributed a mix for Electronic Beats, and the Boiler Room‘s back to back from Quest and Silkie is online.
One of the most anticipated albums for this month should be Severant by Kuedo. The other week he guested on the FACT podcast and I think he also made a mix for Mary Anne Hobbs.
If the last one in this selection gets any extra attention, then it shall be Sotu the Traveller‘s mix for DJ Broadcast.
Update This one just came in, it’s an impressive 95 minutes mix by Bristol’s Appleblim for FACT Magazine
We klearly have to start with this one, the 267th FACT mix put together by Mancunian Krystal Klear. Mix of the week!
Russian radio Headz FM recorded Africa Hitech‘s Moscow live-set from some weeks back. Get the two-part download while you can and also take a look at this tribute by DJ Rasskazov. And if that’s not enough, give Africa Hitech’s set at Sónar 2011 another spin.
Russian beatmaker Damscray and Sunlike are playing a selection of instrumental hip hop for Ukrainian Sashiradioblog. Available for download or stream.
While we’re still waiting for his new album, Ben Westbeech is playing some summer tunes on his mixtape for Vice Magazine.
New York’s Brennan Green has been playing on Beats in Space numerous times and remember these shows as some of the most entertaining ones. Plus he’s always playing good music, so grab his latest.
Tectonic’s Jack Sparrow has made a minimix for his booking agency, Seiji promotes his new record with his Seiji4 Promo Mix, and Eva Be is playing some house records for you.
Like every week, there are plenty of Boiler Room recordings worth grabbing, but Ossie‘s mix deserves special mentioning.
Mary Anne Hobbs keeps uploading those guestmixes for her new show to her Mixcloud account. Check FaltyDL, Machinedrum, Daedelus or the latest show with Teebs and Blawan.
And lastly, here’s one I was sent when my computer was dead. You might have heard of IG Culture’s new labels Holy Roller and HR2. The first releases on the former is the Manz at Work mixtape and features several unreleases remixes.
For those that miss the golden days of broken beat, the latest 12-inch on Hyperdub will wet your pants. It comes from Ossie, it’s out now and there’s no way around it if you ask me.
Make sure you also check out his recent mix for FACT Magazine and grab those free tracks over at SoundCloud.
Benji B has been teasing us with Ossie‘s tracks for ages, but the much anticipated Set The Tone EP on Hyperdub is finally out there. In comes FACT Magazine to interview the young London based producer and ask him for an exclusive mixtape.

02. Karizma – Groove A ‘K” Ordingly (Atjazz Remix)

For me this is one of the best mixes in a long time, so I recommend downloading it while it’s around.
