Paul White – Where You Gonna Go?

If you count in the video for the Paul White-produced ODB, then this isn’t the first encounter between the London beatmaker and video artist Ruffmercy. But this is just me obsessing about the footnotes, maybe. What’s more important, we got another new song from the forthcoming R&S debut by Paul White. And I have to say now I’m more curious than ever to hear what he has come up with, it’s very different for sure.

Titled “Shaker Notes”, the album will be available on September 29, 2014. Pre-orders available directly from the label.

Paul White – Honey Cats

It’s the sad truth that there aren’t many producers taking risks. Once a certain level of success has been reached, innovation often falls by the wayside. But let’s not be unfair towards the struggling artist, the truth is also that we all love our comfort zones, don’t we? Rather than complaining we should give an extra-praise those artists who go out and try something new. Take acclaimed beat-maker Paul White for instance. Following a streak of exciting records within the hip hop domain, he reached a new level of success through his collaborations with Guilty Simpson and more recently Danny Brown. Excitingly, this is where the London-based producer is trying out something else, for it seems his new album on R&S Records could be his take on the blues. The track you can hear above is a first taster from this record and it’s Paul himself taking over the mic this time, sounding somewhere between Damo Suzuki and Thom Yorke. Oh my, who would have expected this?

Titled “Shaker Notes”, the new album will be out on September 29, 2014.

Red Light Beat Battles: Jameszoo vs Paul White

Amsterdam’s Rush Hour is one of the best record stores I’ve never been to (but ordered from countless times), and an excellent label. Unfortunately, their website isn’t anywhere near as good as their various doings and one of its more overlooked sections, because it’s easy to overlook, is their mixtape page. Here is a mix I came across the other day, and despite being two years old already, it’s worth checking out. It’s titled a beat battle between two of our favourites producers, Jameszoo and Paul White, runs for over two hours and features their own productions and records close to their heart. Hope you enjoy this one as much as I did!

Paul White – Watch the Ants

One-Handed Music and Plastic Horse have teamed up again for another Paul White video (actually, it’s just a loop), following The Doldrums and Street Lights. This is the title track off Paul’s forthcoming Watch the Ants EP, a 10-track release featuring Trim, Sean Price, Homeboy Sandman and “rap superstar-in-waiting” Danny Brown.

I’m especially fond of the track above, for it reminded of the more recent work by Nathan Jenkins aka Bullion. Pre-order via Bandcamp, the release date is July 28, 2013.

Seaming To – Vertigo Billy (Paul White Remix)

Taken from the self-released Seaming To remix album, listen to a truly stunning remix by Mr Paul White. I guess you could call it a modern prog-rock masterpiece, so good it’s hard to believe it’s available for free. For free! As for the rest of The Remix Album, give it a listen over on Bandcamp.

Rapping With Paul White (The Room Below Versions)

Eleven months after Paul White released his first rap album, Henry Keen aka The Room Below covered all of its tracks, “replaying everything on drum machines and synths, and writing interludes of his own to give the record a unique flavour…”

Paul White – The Doldrums

The music coming up from the tube was our old friend, Paul White, from the dreaded Rapping with Paul White album. That’s a mediocre Clockwork Orange reference, the movie the track reminds me of.

The fantastic video was animated by the guys at Plastic Horse, and the track is available for free. Free!

Mixtape Monday #24

It would be a bit hard to believe you’re already through with the weekend mixtapes, but here are some new ones anyway.

Among the most anticipated album this autumn (meh!) is certainly Blue Daisy‘s debut full length The Sunday Gift. He gave us an impression on Mary Anne Hobb’s radioshow the other week, now you can listen again on Mixcloud.

The latest FACT podcast comes from Jamie xx and there’s no way around it!

Paul White‘s released a new longplayer in August, giving him the time to play some of his influences on the Potholes podcast.

Amsterdam’s Tom Trago is a figure we’ve been sporting since his debut album came out some years ago. He also knows how to DJ and he proves it on this new mix for URB Magazine.

There’re are too many good radio shows on this planet, here are three worth checking out. Ital Tek plays some records on the Donky Pitch show, and Rinse had Africa Hitech and Floating Points spinning.

I know some of you have mixed feelings about Ricardo Villalobos, but this recording from Romania’s Sunwaves festival really is something.

Ahu mixes Paul White
