We haven’t featured a lot of tracks lately, but this new track from UK man Gerry Read is something to look forward to. Following a series of excellent 12-inches and an album on Fourth Wave, the talented producer has just finished a new EP on Will Saul’s Aus Music. Out on March 24, it also features two remixes of the original by Redshape.
March 23, 2014 The full EP is now available on SoundCloud, take a good listen!
It’s been a good week (and month) for mixtapes, shall we start with our selection for the weekend?
Ben UFO’s and Pearson Sound’s show on Rinse FM is one of the few I make an effort to listen to on a regular basis. While I recommend tuning in every Thursday, let me highlight the show from August 8th (might go offline soon!)
To keep the uptempo vibes, check out another Boiler Room session from Nutriot Podcast contributor Gerry Read, who is about to release another of those fine 12-inches on Fourth Wave.
Twenty weeks into the year and here comes the first edition of our weekly bits and we only noticed how we missed them.
Two years before the Sex Pistols formed, a year before The Ramones got together, three brothers from Detroit formed Death, arguably one of the first punk bands in the world. There is an interesting looking documentary coming to movie theaters (and iTunes) that you might want to check out!
Hard Wax is Berlin’s legendary record store founded in 1989 by Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus, the duo also known for their work as Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound. This interview tells about the early days of Hard Wax.
Domino Records reissued Four Tet’s 2003 album Rounds with a live bonus disc. Out now!
The music video for Kendrick Lamar’s seminal Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe premiered earlier this week, time to revisit the Dr. Dre-produced, Boomclap Bachelors-sampling hit single.
Next up we got two mixtapes worth checking out. The first one comes from Gerry Read ahead of his DJ set at London’s Fabric club, the second from Night Slug’s Girl Unit.
Work on the backend of the site and traveling around have kept me from posting many mixtapes this year, but then again I don’t recall much worth posting. So here is a selection of recommended mixtapes released throughout the month.
About six months ago, we were happy to have Gerry Read contribute to our own podcast series. Since then, the 20 year old Englishman released three much acclaimed 12-inches on the Fourth Wave label. Reason enough for XLR8R to invite him to do their first podcast of the year.
Boiler Room #69 was easily the most successful session to date, with thousand tuned in for the Thom Yorke’s DJ set. The really good sets that night came from others: Lone, Illum Sphere and Jamie xx with Caribou. And it’s the latter’s mix that’s finally available for download.
Two new mixes come from Hyperdub’s own Ossie. The young Londoner guested on GETME! Radio radio-show, as well as on the Hyperdub show on Rinse.
The latest Sonic Router mix comes from Moscow’s Pixelord, interview and download can be found here!
For some proper house music, check out the latest from Linkwood.
One of my favourite podcasts that probably isn’t as popular as it should be is JJ’s Smoking Sessions. Each episode focuses on a specific artists, sometimes a style of music, and the mixes are always spiced up with interview snippets. In their 82th podcast, they decided doing a feature on Moodymann. As always it’s a good one and it deserves the topspot of Weekend Mixtapes.
RAMP Recordings‘ house offshoot Fourth Wave is about to release a new 12″ from Gerry Read, already the second on the young label. Below you can listen to snippets for both of the tracks, I recommend the paying attention to the second track Narry (which you might have heard on a mixtape before.)
I couldn’t find an official announcement about the release date, but Juno lists it with an availability of September 12, 2011. If you slept on the Gerry Read podcast before, please do listen!
Around the time when our last podcast came out, UK’s Gerry Read released his debut on the Dark Arx label. That was quite some time ago and since then Gerry’s interested shifted from deep, techy dubstep to straight house music. Like on his last mixtape, Gerry continue to shows his love for house on this guestmix.
We decided against an interview this time, but if you want to find out more, Sonic Router and Get Some talked to the man a while ago.
While Gerry Read has a page on SoundCloud page, you will have to visit Dark Arx and Live Ones to hear some of his music. His forthcoming 12-inch will be released through the new Ramp Recordings sublabel Fourth Wave, snippets of that just went online.
The good people at Sonic Router premiered this free EP from Golau Glau, consisting of seven tracks in a minimal techno flavour with dubstep influences here and there. Get the music from Bandcamp and don’t miss the the interview.
While we’re at Sonic Router, their latest podcast was mixed by Hotflush’s George FitzGerald and we think you want that.
If you listened to the latest Dark Arx podcast, you’re already familiar with the tracks on their new 12-inch. Coming from West Suffolk’s Gerry Read, the Patterns EP fits well into the label’s young history, drifting somewhere between Ramadanman, Headhunter and Burial.
I haven’t spotted the 12-inch yet, but you can get the digital release directly from the label, on Boomkat, Zero” or Juno.
November 26, 2010 Interview and new a mixtape by Gerry are available on Sonic Router
