The latest entry in Resident Advisor’s Real Scenes brings us to the City of Angels and features the likes of Matthewdavid, Dam-Funk, Sun Araw, the Dublab crew, Camella Lobo of Tropic of Cancer or M. Geddes Gengras as our guides through the city’s night life and music scene. What makes this rather interesting is the absence of certain artist you’d expect to appear in this video, diversifying and expanding one’s image of the city – after, what, four or five documentaries on the L.A. beat scene.
The cover artwork for Matthewdavid‘s new album “In My World” on Brainfeeder already left me speechless, but the video for the record’s title track puts a cherry on top of it. Crazy stuff. I’m not gonna say any more, just watch this and LOL with me!
Despite having posted a track before, I almost forgot there’s going to be a new Matthewdavid album on Brainfeeder, his second album on the label since 2011’s Outmind. Well, to get you over the next couple of days until its release, the LA-based producer shared a new track on his SoundCloud page, a cover version of the Mary Jane Girls’ All Night Long.
Titled “In My World”, the album will hit your favourite record store on July 1st, 2014. Pre-orders available on the NinjaShop or Bleep.
Whenever summer approaches, I reach for my dub records more often for an appropriate soundtrack to the pressing heat. And since it’s not far from there to dub techno, here’s a my favourite mixtape of the month. Berlin-based production duo youANDme, who put together a two hour mixtape full of deep and dubby sounds for the Inverted Audio podcast.
More uptempo sounds can be heard on the latest XLR8R Podcast, selected and mixed by Apron Records-founder Funkineven. Since I missed it before, let me also throw in their previous podcast by Call Super.
I don’t know why I was so surprised, but I’ve really become fond of the new Prins Thomas album (listen on Spotify). Give it a try, if you haven’t! The Norwegian DJ and producer dropped by the Beats in Space to play records for more than an hour.
Listen to a recording of Andrés, who played for more than four hour last May in Cologne’s Roxy club.
This week was a true blessing regarding new releases, but one that almost slipped off my radar is Dual Forms, a joint compilation of Californian labels Stones Throw and Leaving Music. I haven’t been able to give it a proper listen yet, but a look at the tracklist was enough to get me excited. The track above is part of that very compilation as an instrumental, but Leaving Records founder Matthewdavid just uploaded this vocal demo to his SoundCloud.
I wouldn’t mind seeing a 7-inch of this fine track, but for now you and I have to stick to the compilation. You can already buy a copy on cassette or 2-LP/CD/digital directly from the label, most other online retailers only offer pre-orders so far.
As I’ve been away for a couple of days, let me start this week by posting some essentials from the last couple of weeks. Like this recent Brainfeeder takeover of Benji B’s radioshow. There were some excellent substitutes before, Domu comes to mind of course. With appearances from Teebs, MatthewDavid, Samiyam, TOKiMONSTA or label head Flying Lotus himself, it should be needless to say that this show is something really special.
